From the middle of the 7th century onwards, Islam rose to prominence, quickly emerging from the Arabian Peninsula and rapidly expanding northwestward, reaching into the Balkans and challenging the Christian powers of Europe.
They conquered Egypt, exported power to North and West Africa, and even crossed the Atlantic to march into the Iberian Peninsula, forming a encirclement of the Christian world. In the East, they also demonstrated a strong presence in West and Central Asia, even bordering East Asia's great power, China, before moving south to control the subcontinent for more than six centuries.
