The past and present of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's 9th Division.

The 9th Division of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was established on August 15, 1962, and is one of the nine active divisions of the Japanese Army, under the Northeastern Army, with its headquarters located in Aomori Prefecture.

The division's defense area includes Akita, Aomori, and Iwate Prefectures, primarily serving as infantry support for the 7th Armored Division of Japan.

The history of the 9th Division can be traced back to the Imperial Japanese Army, established as one of six newly formed infantry divisions after the First Sino-Japanese War.

The 9th Division is the only Japanese division that did not engage in actual combat during the war and surrendered intact.

Today, the headquarters of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's 9th Division is located in Aomori, commanded by Lieutenant General Shinji Kameyama, with a total strength of approximately 7,000 personnel.

The division comprises three infantry regiments: the 5th Infantry Regiment, the 21st Infantry Regiment, the 39th Infantry Regiment, and the 13th Reconnaissance Combat Battalion, stationed in Iwate Prefecture.
