On the first day of March, Thailand had a big event.

Thailand will allow foreign couples to seek surrogacy services in Thailand.

Couples who meet the conditions must have a legal marital relationship, regardless of their gender. The children born through surrogacy must be protected and their rights guaranteed in the couple's country.

For a while, the topic of surrogacy was pushed to the forefront.

It has become the first peak of Thailand's new year in 2024.

As is well known, surrogacy is explicitly opposed in China.

But in fact, the law only prohibits medical institutions and personnel, and there are no relevant legal constraints for those who have a need for surrogacy.

As long as you want, you can find "formal channels" to find surrogacy abroad, or use "informal channels" to find underground surrogacy institutions in China.

According to no statistics, there are at least 400 such organizations in mainland China, and in just one institution in Shanghai, 10000 babies were born through surrogacy from 2004 to 2017.

The acquiescence of our country's laws and the existence of legal surrogacy worldwide have made surrogacy a gray area.

Even to this day, many people still believe: what's wrong with surrogacy? They just want to have a child, it's understandable. One is willing to give money, and the other is willing to rent out their uterus. You are willing, I am willing.

But is it really that simple?

Behind surrogacy, everything is tragic

Under surrogacy, there is no such thing as voluntariness

In 2013, the BBC produced a documentary called "Survivors", which presented us with the situation that would arise in a society if surrogacy was not allowed.

At that time, international surrogacy in India was still legal.

But behind every happy and smiling customer who returns home is a tragic Indian woman.

The status of women in India is one of the lowest in the world, so they have no right to choose. In addition, they have not received much education since childhood and have no other normal means of livelihood.

Going to surrogate is completely forced by extreme poverty. If surrogacy is not done, the whole family may soon have to eat dirt.

But this is only the reward that comes with a smooth outcome. If you encounter a miscarriage midway, or if there is an accident during the production process, such as a blood transfusion, hysterectomy, or even risking your life, neither the clinic nor the buyer will bear any risk

I can only consider myself unlucky.

Nevertheless, there are still a large number of Indian women flocking to it, after all, $8000 is a considerable income in the local area.

In Ukraine, women who want to live either engage in prostitution or surrogacy

In addition, there is another risk associated with surrogacy.

Underclass women become reproductive machines

Ukraine is currently one of the few countries where legal surrogacy is possible.

The documentary "Motherland" once examined Ukraine's surrogacy industry.

The head of a surrogacy agency said that some clients may request the gender of the child. Once it is discovered that the child is a girl, they must immediately undergo an abortion and arrange for a new surrogate mother.

Some surrogacy agencies, in order to improve the success rate, implanted three embryos into an elderly surrogate mother, and surprisingly, all three were successful!

The buyer is not satisfied, they only want twins.

So, the pregnant mother can only have one child aborted.

Because those wealthy people who choose surrogacy will not consider "love" and "family affection", but only "cost-effectiveness" and "return on investment".

The birth of surrogate children is a blatant commercial activity from beginning to end.

Doctors say that there are also many surrogate babies in India who have been ruthlessly refunded due to not meeting the buyer's requirements.

There are also surrogate mothers in Sichuan, China who were refunded by customers due to accidental infection with syphilis during pregnancy.

But she also chose to secretly give birth to the child, and in order to pay for production costs, she sold the child's birth certificate.

Resulting in girls being in black households for many years, and still unable to attend school when they reach school age.

I have to search for the parents of the child who disappeared in the past to complete the procedures.

Why is Thailand allowing foreigners to have surrogacy in Thailand this time?

The official answer is to address the issues of global fertility decline, labor shortage, and aging.

He is going to shoulder the responsibility of increasing global fertility rates.

Thailand used to be one of the largest surrogacy markets.

Due to several surrogacy scandals, strict regulations were introduced in 2015 to control domestic surrogacy, allowing Thai couples or foreigners to marry for at least three years and undergo surrogacy under government supervision.

Foreigners are not allowed to receive related services in Thailand.

Nearly ten years later, the closed door of the folding fan reopened.

This time, I'm afraid it's to save the economy.

After all, the economic value that surrogacy can bring is very high.

In the face of financial temptations and moral dilemmas, Thailand still chooses the former

Chen Shangmao, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Foguang University, pointed out that:

Thai women have always had a lower status than men, and society is much more tolerant of men than women.

In addition, due to the historical reasons of World War II, Thailand's sex service industry was quite prosperous after World War II, and its output value once accounted for 10% -14% of Thailand's GDP!

Many women choose to become sex workers in order to escape poverty, selling their bodies in exchange for the cost of survival.

In societies with poverty and gender inequality, women are often the first to be sacrificed.

It is not uncommon to rely on women selling their bodies to maintain a family's livelihood.

As a blogger once said, "If surrogacy is legal, one can earn less than 20000 yuan per year through hard farming and working, while the other can earn 300000 yuan per year through a year of hardship in the city."

"How do you let a rural woman choose? Even if she chooses to refuse, will her family follow her in refusing?"

See, once the door to legalizing surrogacy is torn open, the value of a woman's existence will be gradually weakened,

In the end, there is only one left: giving birth.

Endlessly, like a machine, giving birth to children.
